Job Description
B. Penhale is a new restaurant in Smithfield from the team behind Camille in Borough Market. Led by chef-patron Elliot Hashtroudi, the restaurant takes inspiration from the regional cooking and food histories of Britain and Ireland, with a focus on seasonal produce, whole-carcass butchery and a wine list that looks to British and Irish producers and the drinking traditions that inform the restaurant.
We’re looking for someone to join our FOH team and become part of the day-to-day life of the restaurant.
The role is very much about being on the floor and looking after people — welcoming guests, talking through the menu and wine list, running food and drinks, keeping an eye on the room and helping to make sure service feels relaxed, warm and attentive.
You’ll be involved in the day-to-day running of the restaurant, from setting up for service and making sure the room feels right, through to closing down at the end of the night.
Our style of service is knowledgeable and thoughtful without being stuffy. We want people to feel genuinely looked after when they come in, and we’re looking for someone who enjoys that side of hospitality — reading a table, sharing what they know and helping create a really good experience without it ever feeling scripted.
Job Requirements
We’re looking for someone with at least a year’s experience in a similar restaurant or FOH role. An interest in seasonal food, good produce and wine is important — you should be curious and keen to learn.
Warm + Hospitable: You genuinely enjoy looking after people. You’re comfortable talking to guests, can read a table and understand when and how to adapt to the different needs of guests.
A Good Communicator: You listen, communicate clearly and are comfortable asking questions when you’re unsure. During a busy service, you can keep composure whilst communicating with the rest of the team.
Kind + Respectful: We want to work with people who are kind, supportive and good to be around. Hospitality can be demanding, and we think how we treat each other matters just as much as how we look after our guests. Everyone should feel welcome and respected at B. Penhale, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, abilities or beliefs.
Good Attention to Detail: You notice the things that make a service feel good — whether a table needs clearing, a glass needs topping up, the music is a little too loud or a guest needs something before they’ve had to ask.
Curious: You’re interested in food and wine and want to understand what we’re serving, where it comes from and the people and stories behind it. Most importantly, you enjoy sharing that with guests in a way that feels natural and approachable.
