Job Description

We’re looking for a Supervisor / Assistant Manager to join our soon to be opened small independent wine shop and bar in Dalston.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys wine, hospitality and working as part of a small team. You’ll work closely with the owners and help make sure the shop and bar runs smoothly day to day.

The role

You’ll be involved in both the retail shop and evening bar service, so we’re looking for someone who is comfortable moving between selling bottles, talking to customers about wine and running a busy service.

The job will include:

Opening and closing the shop/bar
Running shifts and helping organise the team
Providing friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable service
Helping customers choose wines without making wine feel intimidating
Serving wine, beer and other drinks
Keeping an eye on service standards and making sure the space looks good
Using the POS, handling payments and cashing up
Receiving deliveries and keeping the cellar and stock organised
Stock counts and highlighting products that need reordering
Keeping wine displays, shelves and pricing organised
Making sure wines are stored and served correctly
Helping with rotas and day-to-day shift organisation
Training and supporting other members of the team
Working alongside our visiting/residency chefs
Making sure communication between FOH and the kitchen runs smoothly
Following licensing requirements, including Challenge 25
Keeping on top of cleaning, health & safety and general standards
Helping with tastings, events and other things happening at the bar

Job Requirements

What we're looking for

Ideally, you’ll have previous experience in a wine bar, restaurant, bottle shop or independent hospitality business, including some experience supervising a shift.

We’re looking for someone who is:

Organised and able to keep an eye on several things at once
Comfortable taking responsibility when the owners aren't there
Calm when things get busy
Proactive and happy to get stuck in
Good at communicating with colleagues
Genuinely interested in wine and food
Happy working in a small team where everyone helps with everything

You don’t need to know everything about wine, but you should have a genuine interest in it and be comfortable talking about wine with customers.

Experience with natural, organic and low-intervention wines would be great, but curiosity and willingness to learn are just as important.

We want wine to feel interesting and approachable rather than complicated or intimidating, so being able to talk about it in a straightforward way is important.

The kind of person who will suit us

We’re a small independent business, so this isn't a corporate management job. We want someone who enjoys being involved in all sides of the place.

One part of your day might involve helping someone choose a bottle to take home; later you could be receiving a wine delivery, setting up for the evening, working with a visiting chef, running a busy service and cashing up at the end of the night.
