WHAT DOES A CHEF LOOK LIKE? THE BIG SURVEY.

WHAT DOES A CHEF LOOK LIKE? For too long, the answer in the public imagination has been male—likely white, straight, and in recent years, adorned with a healthy dose of tattoos. But this stereotype poorly reflects the true diversity of our brilliant kitchens. Worse, it perpetuates itself. If women don’t see kitchens as spaces for people like them, many won’t even consider a career in the field. And when women aren’t represented, it sends a message to others that they don’t belong. This cycle reinforces inequality and sustains workplace cultures that fail to recognise, value, respect and respect the contributions of women.
If we want to break this cycle, we need to act. Gathering insights into the first-hand challenges and experiences of female chefs will give us a vital, real-life data set with which we can tangibly demonstrate YOUR experience and advocate for change.

Please take just 5 minutes to complete this survey. And, as we know the power of hospitality friendships and contacts, we would be immensely grateful if you would FORWARD THIS EMAIL to female chefs in your own network, so that our reach can be as wide as possible.

As Chef Simmie Vedi said in our previous articles on this topic: “We need to replace outdated leadership with people who believe in equity and inclusivity.” We can only do that with YOUR input. And Chef Emily Chia reminded us: “Knowing the challenges women face is only half the battle. The next step is creating a culture where everyone can thrive.” Joining your voice with theirs will fuel real, actionable solutions, ensuring kitchens are places of opportunity for everyone.

By completing this survey you’re taking steps to help us create kitchens that reflect the best of our industry—where every chef, regardless of gender, feels valued and empowered.
