The Countertalk Bread & Butter-Off

The Countertalk Bread & Butter-Off

Sunday 4 October 2026, 3:00pm 40ft Brewery Blackhorse, 10 Lockwood Way, London E17 5RB

Following the sell-out success of April's Cheesecake-Off, Countertalk returns with The Bread & Butter-Off: a one-day-only showdown sponsored by Kerrygold that brings together London's top independent restaurants and bakeries to celebrate the ultimate symbol of hospitality and settle who serves the city's finest loaf and churn.

Bread and butter is the ultimate symbol of hospitality, arriving before anything else, setting the tone for the meal, and showing a kitchen’s true skill and generosity. Join Countertalk at 40FT Brewery for the third installment in our Cook-Off series as eight of London's most beloved establishments go head-to-head to compete for the title of Countertalk Bread & Butter Champion.

The all-star lineup runs the gamut from Michelin-starred restaurants to cult bakeries, with offerings from the comforting to the complex. You’ll taste your way through all eight, showing you the full range of what bread and butter can be. Acclaimed Italian-Japanese fusion restaurant Osteria Angelina bring their cloud-soft Hokkaido milk bread with the sweet depth of kumquat jam and burnt honey butter, and cult bakery-restaurant Don't Tell Dad show Asian influence too with a miso and brown rice bread served with chilli, thyme and honey butter. Neighbourhood favourite Peckham Cellars’ focaccia is always served with flavoured whipped butter - whether nori, or confit garlic, or another flavour, it will be a surprise on the day.

Grab a welcome drink, feast on the array of the city's best carbohydrates, and cast your votealongside our expert panel of industry judges, including Jeremy Lee, Anna Higham, Lee Tiernan, Helen Goh, Kitty Tait and Rebecca Spaven.
