The Barbary

The second restaurant from siblings Zoë and Layo Paskin (following The Palomar), where we have been voted Time Out Number 1 restaurant in London in 2017 & 2018 and were runners up at both GQ and OFM Restaurant of the Year 2018.

The Barbary draws from the cuisine of The Barbary or Berber Coast – a past expression referring to the expanse of North Africa towards the Middle East.  A communal clay oven and fire where all the people from the village would come to cook their food; bringing a sense of a community is imbued in the atmosphere of eating here. The Barbary Lion is our emblem symbolising the powerful sultry nature of the open kitchen restaurant as it was the largest and most iconic of Lion species.

Tucked away in Neal’s Yard, a secret courtyard housing the old warehouses of Covent Garden Market, reminiscent of the Moorish towns of Southern Europe and North Africa. Here there stands only a kitchen counter of 24 seats built around the open kitchen.

Role description

  • You will join a fun and energetic kitchen to work in - personality and good customer service are essential with our open kitchen bar serving the food of the North African coast, wider Mediterranean and Middle East in the buzz of Central London's Covent Garden
  • Chef de Partie’s work a 6-shift rota (48 Hours/week) earning £28,700/annum
  • Support from a solid and proud brigade led by our Head Chef Daniel Alt (previously Senior Sous at The Palomar)
  • We’re a young and expanding group with Jacob the Angel and The Blue Posts all opening their doors in the last 18 months – this means opportunity to grow and develop your career in the kitchen

Responsibilities

  • As a Chef de Partie, teach and pass on knowledge to the junior team of Commis and Demi chefs below you
  • Learn to work with the fire of the Robata Grill and the Tandoor oven, a new range of exiting flavours, ingredients and techniques and get stuck in with daily specials

Ideal candidate

  • Passionate about food and also hospitality. In our open-kitchen, you are part of our customers experience and must be confident to help them understand our food and philosophy.
  • At least 3-years experience in the kitchen
  • Experience with mediterranean or middle-eastern ingredients preferable but not essential
