Mandy Yin is one of the few Malaysian chef/owners in the UK, having founded Sambal Shiok in London in 2013. She is a Malaysian-born Chinese of Peranakan Nyonya heritage.
"I take inspiration from everything I ate in my childhood growing up in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Then I mix it up and put a new slant on it."
We showcase the diversity of Malaysian cuisine in vibrant surroundings with exemplary service. With unique yet accessible food, creative drinks and friendly, informed service, we strive to be THE Malaysian destination restaurant in London.
Our menu centres on our signature Nyonya curry laksa, fully customisable including using an untraditional vegan broth. We also have carefully curated snacks and rice dishes which rotate every few weeks, or whenever we feel like it. You will find and learn about a huge variety of South-East Asian ingredients in our kitchen such as shrimp paste, dried shrimp, lemongrass, kaffir limes leaves, pandan.
We aim to make as much as possible ourselves in-house, like our sauces, spice pastes, pickles, crackers. Our primary focus is on taste. We also believe in quality not quantity when it comes to how we work and what we produce.
Mandy's mission is to introduce as many people as possible to Malaysian flavours. Most of our menu is vegan/vegetarian, and we choose to only use halal meat because being Malaysian, she wants to serve everyone and be welcoming to everyone. Food is the greatest unifier.
There is absolutely zero tolerance of bullying, harassment or discrimination of any kind. We foster a merit-based and results-focused environment. Our restaurant is a safe and welcoming space for everyone - our customers AND our staff.
We are hiring an assistant floor manager with start in January 2020. This is a full time role based on a 40 hour week maximum. Tuesday to Saturday 3pm to close. Some flexibility on Saturdays possible to work lunch day shift instead.
Experience and confidence working front of house is necessary. This role will suit someone looking for that next step, a role with some responsibility.
You will join a solid, well-functioning, diverse and efficient team. We are proud to have very low turnover of core staff.
Final salary will depend on experience and will be agreed after a paid trial shift.
You will be involved in every single aspect of working the floor in our small restaurant and will be given intensive training so that you are able to talk knowledgeably about the menu, how the floor should run, and how to manage the team in due course.
The most important quality to us is a can-do, positive attitude! Enthusiasm for spicy Asian cuisine is definitely a bonus.
