St. JOHN Bread and Wine

St. JOHN Bread and Wine opened in 2003, when the baking of bread for which St. JOHN had become noted outgrew the Smithfield location. It was initially intended as a counter for breads and takeaway wines, offering small plates for those who stopped by as they collected their supplies. But its position as a restaurant in its own right soon overtook the original intention and it is widely credited as pioneering the style of seasonal small-plate modern British dining which is now ubiquitous in East London and beyond.

Role description

St. JOHN Bread and Wine's restaurant manager, Emily Butler, is looking for an experienced full time member of staff to join her fantastic team. Working the standard 45-hour week, the candidate will be welcomed in to the extremely busy and very rewarding world of the St. JOHN family!

Fergus calls the front-of-house team 'sentinels of joy' and one of the most rewarding aspects of working for St. JOHN is the passion and enjoyment of our guests. Staff don. their white jackets with pride knowing that they are an iconic and vital part of that enjoyment - to the many beloved regulars, to the visitors who come from overseas to make a St. JOHN pilgrimage, and to the happy locals which are so much a part of the Bread and Wine community. 

Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for: 

  • Serving and welcoming customers in a timely manner
  • Section maintenance
  • Setting up the restaurant and ensuring everything is spotless before services
  • Serving bread from the bakery counter to take away, as well as takeaway wine and merchandise
  • Making coffees and other drinks dispense for the restaurant
  • Taking and handling payments
  • Maintaining good knowledge of the menu and wine list
  • Ensuring that customers have the best possible experience

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A good knowledge of St. JOHN, and an affinity with the philosophy of the restaurant.
  • A strong interest in food and the restaurant industry
  • A warm personality who is keen to chat to regulars and new guests alike
  • Energy and enthusiasm 
  • Experience in a busy restaurant environment
  • A strong focus on customer service
  • Focus on cleanliness and hygiene

Desired experience/skills

The candidate should have:

  • Minimum of two years within the service industry, in a similar role

The discount is great across the restaurants, with 50% off food Monday to Wednesday for tables of up to 4, and 25% off food Thursday to Sunday. Wine is charged at takeaway price when you drink in (so you can drink a £90 bottle of wine over dinner for around £25!) and at cost price to take away.

There are regular, in-depth wine tasting/training sessions to further your knowledge as well as off-site supplier visits to cider makers, breweries, distilleries and more!
