About us

Opened in June 2017, the Garden Café was reviewed by Jay Rayner as ‘one of the loveliest new spaces to open in the capital in a long while, and boasting food to match’. In 2018 it was judged the best Museum restaurant in the world by Leading Cultural Venues. Set within a garden designed by Dan Pearson, it is unique in London in being part of a Museum but a dining destination in its own right.

‘The menu at the Garden Café changes daily based on the seasons and what our fantastic suppliers have to offer. The best quality ingredients are treated with care and attention by the kitchen team with flavour and freshness at the heart of what ends up on the plate’ write Harry and George. It reflects the ethos of the Museum, whose design is contemporary, authentic, and original with an emphasis upon the honesty of materials.  

The café is open for dining every lunch time and one evening a week (Tuesday); in the spring and summer it also opens on Friday evenings. We have just started a programme of once-a-month Supper Clubs.

Turnover is £700,000 p.a., and on top of this we wish to win a greater share of the venue hire events which take place at the Museum: the café is one of five catering choices available to venue hire clients.

Role description

We are looking for a new General Manager to work with founding Head Chefs Harry Kaufman (ex-Great Queen Street, Lyle’s, and St John Bread and Wine) and George Ryle (Primeur, Padella).

The salary range quoted reflects experience and participation in the tronc scheme.


Responsibilities will include:

- Overseeing the day-today operations of the Garden Cafe - ensuring that guests receive the best possible experience, our team are well trained, motivated and happy and to work closely with the assistant manager to make sure the team have all stock, equipment etc. to perform to their best.

- Work closely with the museum team to collaborate on museum events.

- Dedicate some time to winning new events catering business and then organise and run the operations for these events.

- Take responsibility for the financial performance of the restaurant.

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience as General Manager of a successful restaurant. Also desirable:

  • Events experience, ranging from canapé receptions to celebration dinners
  • An understanding of working in a cultural venue, and a creative response to the Museum’s cultural programme
