About us

Providence Row works with more than 1800 homeless and vulnerably housed people a year in East London, offering an integrated service of crisis support, advice, recovery and learning and training programmes.  Our aim is to ensure that people who are so often excluded from mainstream services gain the support and opportunities they need to create a safe, healthy and sustainable life away from the streets. Central to our work are our core values of Compassion, Respect, Inclusiveness, Empowerment and Justice.  These inform the content, style and delivery of all our services.

Our service is on the front line of both homelessness prevention and the local response to rough sleeping. Beginning with the volunteer led triage assessment process that begins in our Welcome Area, clients are allocated according to specialisms in the team covering preventative work and support for rough sleepers. The main emphasis in the service is to do everything possible to move people into appropriate accommodation in a borough, community or country in which they have rights and entitlements to services.  This work is often done in partnership with other organisations, some of which are funded to help people move away from a life on the streets or which may operate in other sectors such as health.

Role description

Through the coordination of volunteers, peers and trainees you will run breakfast and lunch service for the homeless of Tower Hamlets.  Alongside this you will deliver our award winning Catering Training Scheme to the most vulnerable people in our community.  You will also manage the budget and oversee the ordering of all catering provision for the organisation.



Deliver our multi award-winning Catering Trainee Scheme. (40%)

Manage the kitchen to comply with all legal requirements and budget (10%)

Staff, Volunteer and Pro-bono management (30%)

Participate in planning, monitoring and evaluation, and other responsibilities (15%)

Support the Enterprise Coordinator in the delivery of the Rise Bakery consistent with the objectives and targets set out in the business plan (5%)

Ideal candidate

With experience in catering and/or working in a professional kitchen you will have great organisational and time-management skills.  You will oversee the running of our kitchen, including our food service for clients and supervision of trainees and volunteers. You will be passionate about using food as a means to help people overcome exclusion, isolation and poor health. 


The final decision to recruit is based on the completion of a DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check

Desired experience/skills


A proven track record of generating new business (preferably a catering related business), either in a charity or private sector setting

Previous experience in the catering sector and professional cooking, including baked goods and/or pastry making.

An ability to train and lead vulnerable people in a professional kitchen environment.

Ability to work autonomously with some guidance from senior managers

Excellent IT skills, verbal and written communication skills

Excellent time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines

Ability to work outside of normal office hours (if applicable to the role)



A knowledge and understanding of the homelessness sector.

Strong understanding of financial processes and the ability to manage expenditure/budgets



Patience and a calm manner, particularly in handling conflict or disagreement

Flexibility and a can do attitude

The ability to reflect Providence Row’s core values in all work
